Comments and queries for the week of December 25

Poll: The 2015 TV Ehwards

What makes Murdoch Mysteries so very special is that at times it is also a comedy, a science fiction or a romance as well as a mystery show. That is one reason it is the best! —Santa

When Calls the Heart is the greatest show ever! —Carolyn

Blackstone closes down for good

Blackstone so far is the best show APTN has ever had. The one thing that you get out if watching this show is empathy for people who do not grow up and live with silver spoons. Some people are scratching and clawing their way through life and it is hard. —Doug

Sorry to see this series end. Really enjoyed this show. Why do all the good ones have to end? —Laurie

I tried, oh gosh I tried again and again to get into it, but Blackstone was just too depressing for me. There was never any counter balance feel-good, sadly same was true of North of 60. We’ve been north of 60, James Bay on the Quebec side, NWT and Yukon, and rez’s in southern Canada too, and yes , like everywhere on this planet there’s not nice, but, there’s lots of nice too, just like the rest of the planet. The nice should be portrayed too. —Stevie

Sorry to see this show go! I really enjoyed watching and never missed an episode. It might not have been reality TV, but was so much better than other  “reality” or what is classed as reality TV. Going to miss you all, even Andy, you dirty bugger! LOL —Shirley

This Life closes out stellar first season

One of the best shows I’ve seen in years. So very, very impressed with the acting and the fine writing. I hope this show has many, many seasons… —Di

From Tony Wong of the Toronto Star:

Downton Abbey meets Murdoch Mysteries for Christmas
“It’s a Christmas tale, so it’s about good triumphing over evil where someone is trying to destroy Christmas, and Murdoch and his gang are trying to save it,” said Peter Mitchell, writer and executive producer of the Toronto-based production. “Having Brendan here is great because so many Downton fans are also Murdoch fans, so there is a lot of crossover. And you have a star who is translatable on both sides of the ocean.” Continue reading.

From Jim Bawden:

Murdoch Mysteries: A Christmas Celebration
Tonight’s installment A Merry Murdoch Mystery is a bit on the ghoulish side for this time of year –the sighting of a mad monster with horns might give younger viewers nightmares.

But Michael McGowan’s direction is sprightly enough and most of the bases are covered as Yultide entertainment including a look at what were deemed appropriate gifts for children in those days.
Asher is in fine form as Kris Kringle who may or may not have actually stolen a cache of children’s presents to give out as his own. Continue reading.

From Bill Harris of Postmedia Network:

Murdoch Mysteries investigates the holidays with ‘A Merry Murdoch Christmas’
Gold, frankincense and “myrrh-doch.”

Sounds like a festive combination for the holidays.

Of course, one could argue that Christmas came for Murdoch Mysteries a few years ago, when the long-running series was picked up by CBC. Murdoch Mysteries simply has been a far better fit on the public broadcaster than it was on City, and the ratings have proven it was a good move. Continue reading.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … except for a murdered philanthropist and stolen gifts meant for needy children. That’s the main storyline behind Monday’s upcoming Murdoch Mysteries‘ holiday special “A Merry Murdoch Christmas”, a rollicking two-hour present guest-starring Ed Asner as Santa Claus, Downton Abbey‘s Brendan Coyle as Mr. Rankin and The O.C.‘s Kelly Rowan as Mrs. Millicent McGowan alongside the series’ regulars.

“It’s a complete Christmas movie,” showrunner Peter Mitchell—who wrote the instalment—teases. “You don’t have to have seen an episode of Murdoch Mysteries to watch it.”

There’s a lot going on in “A Merry Murdoch Christmas” aside from the main crime: the holidays stir up bad memories for Inspector Brackenreid and Crabtree seems destined for a Christmas alone. And, if the picture of William and Julia can be trusted, a very special gift is in the cards.

Take a peek at these images and get ready for Monday night.
