Review: Crash and burn on Saving Hope

Dana was spot on in this week’s Saving Hope when she asked if she’s seeing what’s really there, or what she wants to see. Between Alex’s prediction that Joel would get bored and leave like before, Dana’s own failure to see what was really going on with her patient and Charlie unable to recognize a ghost as a ghost outside the hospital, “The Other Side of Midnight” was all about perception.

I don’t know if Charlie was more thrown by seeing a ghost outside of the hospital, or that she seemed so real and alive. Usually the spirits he runs into through work know something is wrong, and Lauren Lee Smith’s character didn’t have that direct awareness I’m so used to. Still, as she repeatedly told Charlie to come up to her room I could feel the tone transitioning from flirtatious to urgent. Though perhaps unlike Charlie, I had the added benefit of realizing we were missing our weekly ghost—and that would be a strange thing for Saving Hope to leave out.

But even without all the usual warnings, I don’t think it’s necessarily the best idea for Charlie to go running to Dey. The abrasive, hallucinogenic-stashing psychiatrist still hasn’t won me over—in part because I’m still not over Gavin’s unceremonious departure, but also because nothing he’s done since showing up has convinced me he’s trustworthy enough for Charlie’s secret. Dey’s fascinations with hallucinations might, on the one hand, be pretty useful for this case, but it might also get in the way of getting Charlie what I’m confident he wants: no more ghosts.

Though that massive cliffhanger left me wondering if Charlie was at least about to get one thing he wanted. I’m not entirely clear on the timeline of Alex and Charlie’s break up and Alex and Joel’s new relationship (which has, apparently, escalated to Liberia). If it’s been about 10 weeks since Katz kissed Maggie then there’s a strong chance Alex’s look of concern had to do with her newfound belief that Joel hasn’t changed, though I’m leaving the door open for some paternity debate too.

As for Liberia—it came as out of the blue for me as it did Alex. While I know Joel has a history of wanderlust, he’s been pretty locked into Hope Zion of late and I was surprised to hear him sound so ready to ditch the clinic and the hospital to visit a country I’ve never heard him mention. It felt like yet another convenient foil for the couple. And unless hopping on a plane to go home for a bit triggered something, I can only assume that getting back together with the woman he was staying rooted for has him dreaming of a life they could have together. It’s just unfortunate that, as fun as Alex is, she’s never really struck me as the pick-up-and-go type. And she’s really not going to be that type with a baby on the way.

Then again, it’s not like this week’s main case was really going to fill anyone with confidence about a certain type of person. In hindsight, Alex’s extreme concern about Nathan’s family makes more sense when compared to her own worries about how much she can depend on Joel for. There was nothing reassuring about Tawny’s arrival, even if Nathan’s ex-wife did come with all the information they needed to treat him. The list of Nathan’s exploits, the damage they’ve done and Tawny’s desperate efforts to protect her daughter from any of the details of how precarious her father’s lifestyle is were overwhelming enough without being in the similar position Alex felt she was in.

Still, as last week established, Joel and Alex aren’t long for this world—two episodes into their relationship and there’s been an awful lot of fighting. Then again, maybe Alex is just freaking out over the prospect of a baby when her life is so transitional right now. Or that those Joel revelations triggered her very worst memories of him, and the suggestion of Liberia has her thinking her potential baby daddy is in even less of a firm place than she is. Or maybe it is Charlie’s, and there’s a whole other mess she’s bracing for. It all depends on how she looks at it.

Saving moments:

  • I’m sorry Maggie, but who puts a sweater in their top drawer?
  • “There are 17 steps to making a crepe. Try and get one of them right.”–Shahir
  • “If I eat them I’ll go into anaphylactic shock and die.” Katz’s flirting could use a bit of work.
  • “They’re making me feel like crepe.” Granted this should have been a big tip off to everyone. Who doesn’t like the smell of crepes?
  • “Aren’t we the Lord and Lady of Downer Abbey.” I would much prefer this show to the real Downton.
  • Also, Zach and Melanda? Hoping this isn’t going to be another Dawn/Reycraft.

Review: Lost Girl visits Valhalla

While I’m all for movies wrapping up a series that came to an unexpected end, I’m happy to see Lost Girl joining the ranks of Canadian series that have known the end was nigh and been able to plan accordingly. And maybe especially for a show like Lost Girl, that has such a deep, complicated mythology that—at times—felt like it was getting murkier as the story went on. Knowing that the answers are (hopefully) all going to come out in the next 16 episodes is, in its own way, a relief.

Or at least, that’s the upshot I’m going with now that I have to say goodbye to yet another Canadian series this year.

Lost Girl didn’t waste any time getting to some of those answers—even if it technically has the extra time to play with—and Bo managed to find the missing Hell Shoe in the first minutes of the opening episode (and take out a trio of creepers along the way). Although, I don’t know that just letting herself drop from an eagle’s nest was the best idea unless she was already counting on sucking the life energy out of some hikers. And I would have liked an idea of how she found the mythical other shoe after such a big deal had been made about reuniting the pair to at least explain why this only happened now.

Though perhaps in the long run managing to locate the shoe (and re-find the other one) were minor details in an episode that had to explain the inner-workings of Valhalla to us, and with minimal help from Tamsin. Or rather, and far more to the point of any fan that’s been waiting in agony for Lost Girl to return ever since Season 4’s harrowing finale, the story of the shoe was really about getting Bo and Kenzi back together again—and once that happened I don’t think anyone cared if the devil (or mistress) wore Prada or hemp because the girls were eating Chunky Monkey.

I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as Bo approached Kenzi’s room thanks to the ominous and not to hopeful comments the showrunner and producers have been making all summer that she was going to find something terrible there instead. But then it started to look like last season’s double death was going to end up being a fake out—or at least looked like a partial fake out when Kenzi was returned unceremoniously to her body, which happened to be inconveniently located in a coffin, underground. I was torn between wanting Kenzi and Hale to head off into the Bifröst together—as heartbreaking as that would be for the friends—if only to give the girl the happy ending Bo was right in saying she deserved, and having the friends live out this last season together on Earth. Since the series has been given its chance to say goodbye, it was good that Bo and Kenzi got that chance too, even if it looked like that might not have been necessary.

But with Ksenia Solo listed as a special guest in the end credits, I don’t know that the goodbyes were entirely pre-emptive. Now that Kenzi knows Hale is there and their marriage something Freyja (Michelle Nolden, Saving Hope) was more than happy to arrange, I can see her opting—now that she’s gotten out of her deal with Bo’s father—to return to Valhalla and the wedding (and, I assume, put the kibosh on Freyja’s plan to take another soul from someone close to Bo). I just can’t help but wonder if Bo is going to get out of wherever that elevator shaft is taking her before Kenzi makes that decision, or what would happen if Kenzi leaves for a second time without telling Bo.

And while it didn’t seem like Dyson and Lauren had too much going on in comparison to Bo heading off to meet her father, I feel like the episode did a great job raising the stakes for everyone. Whether it’s potential fallout from Dyson and Lauren trespassing in Valhalla as Freyja ordered Stacy to take another soul, or Tamsin’s bout of Valkyrie resting face leading to Bo doubting her again, or even Lauren turning to Tamsin and Trick to help Bo, there’s a sense they’re all ready to start making sacrifices to settle things once and for all. Which should mean plenty of answers and fun for us.

Lost items:

  • I’m not one to judge how someone snacks, but why did Tamsin have the world’s sharpest knife next to her while chowing on a sandwich?
  • Did anyone else get confused by all that white light and think for a second that Hale might be an angel?
  • “Please tell me that’s your resting Valhalla face.” This is why we need Kenzi for the final season.
  • And I’m calling it now: the answer to the Bo/Lauren/Dyson love triangle is her being with both of them. Digging Kenzi up is bonding time.

Review: Saving Hope checks back in

It’s a credit to Saving Hope’s writers that fans of the series get so invested in the show’s relationships, with things even occasionally getting a bit nasty between Teams Joel and Charlie. Which is why it’s such a shame that Season 3 has rarely allowed viewers to enjoy those couples once they finally happen.

In between watching Dawn do an about-face on a boyfriend twice in seven episodes, having Gavin go on a bender and take off after he and Maggie derailed, and Alex waking up without any sense of her feelings for Charlie, I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that things with Joel hit a rocky patch almost as soon as they started. We’ve barely had any screen time with the couple—which has been teased for over two seasons now—before another flashback triggered what I expect is the return of Alex’s feelings for Charlie.

Though to be fair, Charlie’s gracious acceptance of defeat went a long way toward making up for how I felt about him racing off to pick a fight over the issue at the beginning of the season. Seeing that side of Charlie, instead of the angry, jealous one might also have helped remind Alex of the time they were everything to each other before a series of comas, ghosts and other dramatics threw their relationship through the processer. And it’s hard to deny the heat between Selena and Joel, which was back for another round.

But again, after wondering for so long when the other half of the love triangle would get its day (as they always do), it’s a bit disappointing to have all that build up thrown out almost immediately. The payoff, even for fans of the obvious end game of Charlie and Alex, is always so small compared to the build up that it’s going to make it hard to let myself get too invested in the characters’ personal lives should the trend keep up.

Thankfully, for a series that’s making a thing of the three-day work relationship, Wednesday’s “The Heartbreak Kid” did a much better job of picking up the continuity with some returning guests and cases. As a fan of Lexa Doig from her work on Arctic Air, seeing her back as the brash and charismatic Selena was a pleasure and her clinic is proving to be a rich resource for a completely different kind of patient and practice. I’d settle for seeing Joel commit more time to it since it fits well with his character history, but I won’t deny it would be interesting to see the rest of Hope Zion’s doctors start helping out and getting a break from their usual clientele—and I’m wondering if that opening scene was enough to possibly lure Zach to its doors and give Benjamin Ayres something more meaty to chew on.

And even without Lara’s ghost to milk the birth of Ezra Zarb for all its devastating emotional potential, having Joris Jarsky back to show us how David has been holding up since deciding to keep his wife on life support for their son was another welcome return. It’s not often we get to see how Charlie’s patients and their families fare after their otherworldly intervention and this particular case was deserving of a follow up if only to see how far David’s come since from angry, wall-punching person he was when we first met him.

Which also tied neatly into the evolving relationship between Maggie and Katz as they revisited their first case together and Maggie tried to prove she could be the kind of doctor Katz wanted her to be. I feel like just about everyone knows Maggie is ready to move onto the next step and having Katz hold her back suddenly was as frustrating to watch as I’m sure it was for the character. I’m hoping that ending—as unexpected and random as it was—means Katz realized it too and might change her brusque black-and-white emotionless approach (which saw her encouraging David to punch a wall in the first place). As for what else that kiss could mean, I’d read into it but I’m sure they’ll break up soon enough.

Hope-ful moments:

  • Joel: “I guess a guy could pull a knife on me again.”
    Zach: “Again?”
  • “LaRouched” is now a thing.
  • “Hang up, and it’s lady not gentleman.” I was really impressed with how Saving Hope handled the issue of pronouns with Teddy and would love to see more shows be this direct and comfortable with it.
  • “I look like an exploded burrito.” Tatum’s sass, especially with Charlie, was surprisingly fun.
  • That being said, the opening scene of her screaming as they examined her legs was almost too real. I can’t say enough about the effects and make up team on this series.

Charlie’s befuddled season on Saving Hope

Saving Hope’s Michael Shanks is quick to laugh when asked about the rough go his character Charlie has been having on the show this season—having just been dumped by his ex-wife, recent rebound and potential baby momma after only just losing the love of his life when yet another marriage proposal went awry.

“I don’t think any season’s been particularly kind to Charlie, come to think of it,” he says. “Erica [Durance] and I make jokes all the time that it’s kind of a sport for our writers to put them through the blender and see what comes out the other side. I think if the characters were happy we wouldn’t have any drama left in the show, but this season has been another run through the grist mill for old Chuck, and he’s a little confused at the moment.”

In fact, the word Shanks keeps bringing up to describe his character’s current state is “befuddled,” especially after having things go suddenly and spectacularly south with Alex (Durance), and he expects that emotion will carry into finding out Alex has picked things up with her old flame, Joel (Daniel Gillies), again. As he says, “Given the fact he’s aware what happened between them before and aware of how Alex felt about it, to see her go down that road again is going to be a little perplexing to him.”

Added to that is his ex-wife’s series of baby bombshells, yet again teasing the possibility of Charlie becoming a dad. Shanks admits to having some misgivings when Season 1 brought up the possibility of Alex being pregnant while it wasn’t clear if Charlie would ever wake up (he jokingly suggests the thee kids he has to Charlie’s zero might be an influence), but says the writers are certain the character wants to be a dad. Just maybe not with Dawn.

Behind the scenes, Shanks is also stepping up. Season 3’s fourth episode, “Stand By Me,” marked his first time directing for the series—he previously directed an episode of Stargate SG-1 and some of Saving Hope’s webisodes last season.

“You have new people to prove yourself to, and prove your interest and prove your expertise, so I worked my way up to the point where they were going to trust me to direct one and I think it worked out well. I enjoy the artistic stance in terms of [having] a larger part of the control of the storytelling process. It’s something I want to continue to do, but we’ll take it step by step.”

Though he’s less certain whether he’d want to take up writing for the show the way he did on Stargate.

“There’s very much a structured hierarchy when it comes to writing—more than the other departments in the television world,” he explains. “There’s a protocol that goes up the food chain when you’re starting off writing, and a lot of things that come out the other end are not always yours even though they have your name attached to it. So it can be a little bit frustrating to be writing for television. I can empathize with a lot of the writers, especially the ones that are further down the trough.”

Still, he goes on, “That being said, if I do get the time over the hiatus, I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at writing a story.”

Saving Hope star talks most challenging season yet

Saving Hope just might be the Canadian show that could. While this summer saw two Canadian shows, Seed and Working the Engels, come to a sudden end after failing to grab an American audience, Saving Hope avoided that fate after NBC dropped it at the end of Season 1. Going into Season 3, it’s not only managed to stay on the air in Canada, but it’s gotten picked up by another American network.

The difference between NBC and ION, Saving Hope’s new southern home, is a U.S. network willing to put the energy into promoting the show. Canada-born Daniel Gillies, who plays Dr. Joel Goran, can’t say enough about the attention the drama’s been getting south of the border.

“They’re an interesting new energy. They’re the kind of hot, burgeoning new network in the United States and they’ve got all these amazing shows,” which include Canada’s Rookie Blue, Flashpoint and the recently-finished The Listener. He adds, “I think there are a lot of viewers who managed to watch it in spite of the lack of publicity in the beginning and those sort of steadfast fans who had to sort of either download or whatever to find out what was happening with us and now, obviously, are pretty delighted it’s got some U.S. distribution again.”

But it’s the support at home that’s kept Saving Hope on the air and the Canadian fan-base has certainly been a strong and vocal one—when the show returned with a two-night premiere, it won its Thursday night timeslot with 1.2 million viewers. “If it had even a fraction of what was happening here in Toronto that first year,” he says, “We would have had a degree of longevity because it’s a very good show.”

Things only seem to be picking up this season, which opened with Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) on the operating table after being stabbed in the heart with a pair of scissors. While the second half of the return ended with Alex waking up, it only set the stage for more tension on the hospital drama, which meant plenty more Joel for Gillies to discover. “I’ve been shooting this show for three years and I’ve never seen his bedroom,” he laughs, before calling it the most challenging season for the character yet. Since Joel was partially responsible for Alex getting stabbed in the first place, it’s taken his character to a much darker place.

“He’s sort of addressing and embracing a lot more of the emotional aspects of his career than he ever did,” Gilles explains. “I think that Joel was someone who derived his identity purely from his work and I think now he’s discovering he’s much more than that. By sticking around in one place he’s been forced—there’s this kind of mandatory introspection by being around. These energies around him are eliciting all this stuff from him that he’s probably never looked at himself before.”
