Filming underway on Season 5 of Private Eyes

From a media release:

 Global and Entertainment One (eOne) announced today that production is underway on Season 5 of the smash-hit series, Private Eyes (8X60). From Canadian broadcaster and production partner Corus Entertainment, with leading independent studio eOne, the new season returns with more cases and drama for Everett & Shade Private Investigations. Canada’s favourite detective duo Angie Everett (Cindy Sampson) and Matt Shade (Jason Priestley) are back with eight new episodes featuring more cases and some real questions about their future together, professionally, and personally. As the recipient of the 2019 Golden Screen Award for Canada’s most-watched comedy or drama, Season 4 of Private Eyes is set to air later this fall on Global.

Season 5 welcomes back Shade’s daughter, Jules Shade (Jordyn Negri) and her boyfriend Liam Benson (Jonny Gray); Shade’s father, “The Soup Don” Don Shade (Barry Flatman); Everett and Shade Agency’s assistant, Zoe Chow (Samantha Wan); Officer Danica Powers (Ruth Goodwin); Angie’s mother, Nora Everett (Mimi Kuzyk); Shade’s ex-wife, Becca D’Orsay (Nicole DeBoer); and Angie’s childhood friend, Detective Kurtis ‘Maz’ Mazhari (Ennis Esmer).

Guest stars this season include Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica) as Jada Berry, Shade’s new love interest; Brett Donahue as Tex Clarkson (Bad Blood); Sagine Semajuste (Grand Army) as Laila Maxton, the successful Financial Health Coach; Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) as Chief George Cutler, and special appearances by Canadian Singer-Songwriter, Royal Wood; renowned Toronto Drag Queen, Lucy Flawless, and more.

Private Eyes is produced by eOne in association with Corus Entertainment, with the participation of the Canada Media Fund, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit. The series is executive produced by Jocelyn Hamilton and Tecca Crosby for eOne, Shawn Piller and Lloyd Segan for Piller/Segan, Jason Priestley, Alexandra Zarowny and James Thorpe. Piller, Zarowny and Thorpe are also showrunners.

Preview: Jann Arden guest-stars in Private Eyes’ Season 3 return

In what has quickly become a spring tradition, Private Eyes—Global’s fun detective drama starring Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson—returns for a third season of 12 new instalments beginning this Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

When we last left the duo, things were looking grim. Conned into stealing sensitive government intelligence, Angie Everett (Sampson) ended up behind bars. Now it’s up to Matt Shade (Priestley) and their assistant, Zoe Chow (Samantha Wan), to prove Angie’s innocence.

Here is the official episode synopsis for “Catch Me If You Con,” written by Alan McCullough and directed by Shawn Piller:

In the aftermath of Angie’s incarceration, Shade and Angie must risk everything to recover the stolen hard drive and clear Angie’s name. Their hunt leads them to a lavish museum gala where a priceless ancient artefact is on display.

And here are a few more hints from me after watching a screener.

The hottest commodity in Canadian television at the moment—guest-starring on Wynnona Earp and headlining her own series, Jann—Jann Arden plays Loretta. The cell block boss isn’t happy a high-profile inmate like Angie is on her turf. That causes, um, problems. As an aside, I love trying to locate where Toronto-set shows have filmed. When it comes to the exterior views of the prison Angie is in, the show chose the stately R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant.

Laura Vandervoort and Colin Ferguson return
The pair who set Angie up in the first place, Dana and Dominik, have skipped off leaving no trace of evidence to connect them with the hard drive. Saving Angie and getting the hard drive back is going to be tough.

Agent Ellis won’t drop his case until the hard drive has been handed to him, adding more pressure to Shade, Angie and Zoe’s task. Eagle-eyed Haven fans will, of course, recall Bryant, Priestley and Ferguson all appeared on that show together, which was executive-produced by Shawn Piller, Private Eyes‘ executive producer and sometime director. Also, Killjoys fans should look for Sean Baek; he plays a security expert who may have had his laptop stolen by Dana.

Zoe goes undercover
Samantha Wan always injects the perfect amount of hand-waving comic relief, especially when she’s in the field. Wednesday’s episode gives her the opportunity for more antics, especially when she goes undercover as Zoe Von Furstenberg … something … something.

Private Eyes airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Global.

Preview: Private Eyes goes on a “Getaway with Murder”

I’ve been excited about Sunday’s episode of Private Eyes since May of 2017 when Cindy Sampson teased that Matt, Angie, Dr. Ken and Melanie were spending a weekend together.

Now that weekend is here and there’s, of course, murder afoot. And laughs. Here’s what Global has revealed regarding “Getaway with Murder.”

Shade and Angie are hired by the owner of a luxurious rustic lodge to investigate an infidelity case. Thinking it’ll be a breeze and a good opportunity for a mini-vacation, they invite Ken and Mel along to join them. But when their client ends up dead and the local sheriff proves to be out of his depth, they ditch their dates to solve the case – ultimately leaving them out in the cold.

And here is more info I can divulge of the instalment, written by Marcus Robinson and directed by James Genn, after watching a screener.

Ken has big plans for the weekend
It may be work for Angie, but Ken (Mark Ghanimé) has plotted some fun stuff for the couple, as well as a surprise for his lady love.

Kris Lemche guests
The veteran Canadian actor from such series as Emily of New Moon, Joan of Arcadia and a standout performance on Haven as Seth Byrne is unforgettable on Sunday as Deputy Conroy, who proves to be a tad inept when it comes to solving a grisly crime. Luckily, Angie, Shade, Mel and Ken are there to help in the investigation.

The Dream Team indeed
I’m not-so-secretly hoping there is a reason for Ken and Mel to join Shade and Angie on more cases. The quartet works really well together on this case and has a great chemistry. Fingers crossed the producers noticed this too.

Maz and Zoe together again
An escape room scenario allows the pair some quality time, leading to hilarity.

Preview: Private Eyes goes medieval

So, Private Eyes, fans, how do you feel about the way Angie and Shade’s relationship has shaken out so far? Clearly, Angie is still hurting from seeing Mel over at his house, hence the thinly-veiled jabs at him. For his part, Shade seems for the most part clueless, though he’s picking up on a certain vibe from his business partner.

In this Sunday’s new episode of Private Eyes, Angie and Shade head to Medieval Times. Here’s what Global says about “Long Live the King,” written by Thomas Pound and directed by Charles Officer:

Shade and Angie are hired by the “King” from Medieval Times after he believes he’s been poisoned. Initially doubtful of the King’s story – and weary of his refusal to break character – they soon get onside once they go undercover and see just how cutthroat the Middle Ages can be.

And, as always, a few more tidbits of info from me after watching a screener.

Samantha Wan kills with her comedy
Adding Zoe to Everett Investigations was the best decision Angie and Shade have made so far. Samantha Wan’s frantic portrayal of Zoe is hilarious and her comic timing is perfection; both are showcased this week. And her Sticky Note game is strong.

Rob Ramsay in a role fit for a King
I’ve been a fan of Rob Ramsay’s since I saw him on Blue Mountain State and then on The Thundermans. Here he’s super-annoying—and sidesplitting funny—playing Bob Sterling, a.k.a. King Lucien, the Medieval Times monarch who refuses to break character, frustrating Angie and Shade during their investigation.

Double entendres aplenty
This being a medieval setting, Thomas Pound’s script boasts plays on words, double entendres and discussions about men’s longswords. Yes, I laughed. Yes, I am 47 years old.

Preview: George Chuvalo delivers knockout punch in Private Eyes’ return

When we last left Shade and Angie, things had gotten a little weird with their personal relationship. As a matter of fact, Angie realized she had feelings for her partner and drove over to Shade’s house to tell him that. Unfortunately, just before she knocked on his front door, she spotted Mel and Shade getting intimate. Angie turned to Ken for solace.

After waiting close to a year for Private Eyes to return with new episodes on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Global, where are Shade and Angie? Solving crimes of course! Here’s what Global’s episode synopsis says regarding “Kissing the Canvas.”

After being hired by a boxer to prove a fight was fixed, Shade’s sucker-punched when he meets the boxer’s manager: none other than his ex-manager who made off with all of Shade’s money! Angie brings in her mother Nora as a gambling advisor to help crack the case, hopefully before their client gets the knockout of her life.

Who is back for the second half of Season 2?
Zoe (Samantha Wan) and Detective Mazhari (Ennis Esmer) return, along with Jules (Jordyn Negri), Don (Barry Flatman), Becca (Nicole DeBoer), Mel (Bree Williamson) and Dr. Ken (Mark Ghanimé).

George Chuvalo guest-stars in Sunday’s instalment
The five-time Canadian heavyweight boxing champ who took Muhammad Ali the distance twice in the ring appears as himself.

A former Call Me Fitz co-star stops by
Peter MacNeill, a.k.a. Ken Fitzpatrick, shows up to play Shade’s old manager Murray Clavin. And Shade isn’t happy to see him. Also appearing in guest roles this week are Conrad Coates and Tony Nappo. Workin’ Moms Mimi Kuzyk reprises her gig as Angie’s mom, Nora.

Zoe and Maz are back at it …
… and quickly threatening for cutest/most awkward couple on primetime TV.
