Preview: Hollywood Suite’s Creepy Bits return with perfect bite-sized horror

I’m a massive fan of Stephen King and his body of work. The first novel I read of his (at around the age of 12) was Cujo, and I quickly backtracked to read Carrie, The Shining and Salem’s Lot. But it was the short story collection, Night Shift, that truly enthralled me. Jam-packed with horrors about huge, hungry rats, a monstrous therapist and a demon-possessed industrial laundry folder, I was amazed at how King could create whole worlds and tell compelling stories on a handful of paper.

Creepy Bits reminds me of that. Returning Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern—and available to stream now via Hollywood Suite’s on demand option—Creepy Bits are tales of terror told in 15 minutes or less.

Created by David J. Fernandes, each of the 10 episodes delves deep into the unknown, drawing inspiration from contemporary issues and venturing into uncharted territories of fear. A diverse range of filmmakers directs each, and the stories are equally unsettling.

Every one of the stories is noteworthy, but my favourites include the first instalment, “The Massacurra Man,” written and directed by Adrian Bobb; and “Bonded,” written and directed by Ashlea Wessel. While the former is straight-up creepy and cool, the latter builds with music and atmosphere until the final, horrific moments. Honourable mentions go to “Hors d’Oeuvre,” written and directed by Fernandes; and “Route 17,” written and directed by Kelly Paoli.

Check them out if you like being scared at things that go bump in the night.

Creepy Bits airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern on Hollywood Suite and on demand.

CBC and Sphere Media start production on menopause comedy Small Achievable Goals from Meredith MacNeill and Jennifer Whalen

From a media release:

CBC and Sphere Media today announced that production is underway on new original comedy series SMALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS (8×30), co-created by and starring Meredith MacNeill and Jennifer Whalen. The series, which is currently filming in Toronto and Hamilton, will premiere in winter 2025 on CBC and CBC Gem.

SMALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS follows odd couple Julie (Whalen) and Kris (MacNeill), as they are thrust together to produce a podcast while grappling with “the change” – aka menopause. The duo embark on a journey of transformation, helping each other through workplace challenges and office politics, dating and relationship drama, and some serious health concerns. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, they will be reborn as sexy, silver-haired, wizard women! Or at least wiser, less sweaty versions of themselves.

“We want to make a joyful comedy about menopause because in this time of life we could all use a laugh,” said Whalen. “For those of us going through it, we see you. For everyone else, enjoy the ride!”

“Making something hot and bloody with Sphere and the CBC — everyone’s revved up to take it all the way home,” said MacNeill. “Normally one would say that we stand behind the message, but the message is so strong, we believe it stands behind us.”

“This series is at times hilarious, surprising, and revealing as it looks at a very normal part of aging that affects half the population but is still spoken about in hushed tones,” said Trish Williams, Executive Director, Scripted Content, CBC. “This workplace sitcom is bound to become a conversation starter as audiences relate – and react – to the experiences of Kris and Julie as they discover what it means to experience menopause.”

“We’re so thrilled to be working with the talented Jennifer and Meredith, and with CBC on this fresh, funny look at menopause and midlife,” said Elise Cousineau, Executive Producer at Sphere Media. “It’s hilarious, highly relatable, and we’re excited to be a part of bringing it to the screen.”

A CBC Original Series, SMALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS is produced by Sphere Media. The series is created by Meredith MacNeill and Jennifer Whalen (Baroness von Sketch Show), who also serve as Executive Producers alongside Stacy Traub, and Sphere Media’s Jennifer Kawaja, Bruno Dubé and Elise Cousineau.

Preview: HGTV Canada’s Hoarder House Flippers returns for more renovations and re-sells

The pandemic gave everyone the unique opportunity to re-access the contents of their homes, condos and apartments. Where I live, in western Quebec, we were able to pare down our stuff by joining a social media group designed to offer gently used items to those interested for free. The idea? To foster community while saving things from the landfill.

Some folks look to cash in when getting rid of clutter, and that’s explored to the nth degree in Hoarder House Flippers.

Returning for Season 2 this Wednesday on HGTV Canada, house flippers from across the country, buy, clear out and overhaul houses that, in some cases, are packed to the rafters with the previous owners’ things.

In the first episode, siblings Heather and Nathan head to Portage la Prairie to assess the trash and treasure lurking in their latest flip. They are greeted with rooms that are filled with stuff. Picture a packed storage locker… in each room. Overwhelmed by glassware, an overgrown fish tank, clothes and creepy dolls, the siblings call on friends to help fill dumpsters and sell small items, with the profit returning to the community. (The siblings acquired the property from relatives who had encountered unexpected challenges with the property, including a hoarding situation.)

Then it’s on to gutting, renovating and reselling. With the rooms emptied, the true potential of Heather and Nathan’s purchase and big issues are revealed. A complete rewiring of the home could eat into their profits big-time and delay their planned two-month reno schedule. The end results? Simply stunning.

I watch a lot of renovation series on HGTV Canada, and what sets Hoarder House Flippers apart for me is how relatable—in the first episode anyway—Heather and Nathan are. Funny, capable and honest, I feel like I could grab a drill, hammer or pry bar, and help without feeling embarrassed or out of place.

This second season includes episodes featuring the Mbaye brothers, more of Heather and Nathan and new flippers Stephanie and Deidre.

Hoarder House Flippers airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada.
